David Pogue is an American technology and science writer and TV presenter. He is an Emmy-winning correspondent for CBS News Sunday Morning and author of the “Crowdwise” column in The New York Times Smarter Living section.

Pogue was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, the son of Patricia Ruth Raney and Richard Welch Pogue, a lawyer and former managing partner of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue. He is the grandson of Mary Ellen Edgerton and L. Welch Pogue, an aviation lawyer.

He is also a great-nephew of Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s electrical engineering professor Harold Eugene Edgerton. Pogue received a bachelor’s degree in music from Yale University in 1985 summa cum laude. He spent ten years working in New York, first as a conductor and arranger in Broadway shows, then briefly in the Music Theatre International office.

His own Missing Manual line of computer how-to books, which he started publishing in 1999, now has more than 100 titles and covers a wide range of Mac and Windows operating systems and apps. Among the many books Pogue has published are Pogue’s Basics (2014), a New York Times bestseller, and The World According to Twitter (2009), which he co-wrote with about 500,000 of his Twitter followers.

Pogue made his decision to leave The New York Times after 13 years on October 21, 2013, and to join Yahoo! where he will launch a new consumer technology website.
